Today's Verse
This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.

Historical Context
Exodus 12 sits at the hinge of the Old Testament. For four centuries the descendants of Jacob had been in Egypt, most of that time as slaves. The nine plagues have already fallen. Now God tells Moses that on this night, the tenth plague will pass through the land, and every firstborn not covered by the blood of a lamb will die.
What is striking in verses 14-28 is that before the rescue happens, God is already legislating how Israel will remember it. The Passover is instituted as a yearly feast, together with the seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread, before a single Israelite has walked out of Egypt. God knows His people. He knows how quickly deliverance fades from memory when the next harvest, the next war, the next generation arrives.
The details assume things ancient readers understood. Leaven, a lump of fermented dough kept back from the last batch, was the ordinary starter for bread. Removing it from the house was drastic and total, a break with the old life. Hyssop was a common brushy plant, cheap and available to any household. The lintel and doorposts framed the entrance, so the blood marked the whole house as belonging to the LORD. And the question in verse 26, "What do you mean by this service?", was not hypothetical. It was built into the meal. Children would ask, and parents were commanded to answer, generation after generation, so that no Israelite would forget what kind of God had bought them out of slavery, and at what cost.
Reflection
Notice what God does here. Before He rescues His people, He tells them how to remember the rescue. He does not trust the memory of the moment to carry itself. He builds an annual meal, a physical act, a question the children will ask, so that the deliverance will be told and retold in every household forever.
We are forgetful people. The mercies of last year fade by spring. The prayer answered in January is old news by June. The sin we were freed from returns and knocks softly on the door, and we wonder why we no longer feel the horror of it. God knows this about us. That is why He gave Israel a feast, and why He gave us the Lord's Supper. "Do this in remembrance of me," Jesus said, at a Passover meal, with bread and a cup, on the night He became our Passover Lamb.
Paul makes the link explicit: "Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:7). The blood on the doorposts was always pointing to Calvary. The destroyer that passed over Israel's houses is the judgment that passes over everyone hidden in Christ. There is no other shelter. Not sincerity, not effort, not the vague hope that God is too kind to condemn. Only the blood.
So remember. Remember at the Table. Remember when you pray. Remember out loud, in front of your children, so they will ask what you mean by it and you can tell them. A faith that is not rehearsed is a faith that quietly dies. The God who rescued you commands you to keep telling the story, because the telling is part of how He keeps you.

Prayer
Father, You are the God who rescues and the God who commands us to remember. Forgive us for how quickly we forget the price of our freedom. Fix our eyes on the blood of Christ, our Passover Lamb, and let His sacrifice be more real to us than the troubles of this day. Teach us to tell the story to our children, to our neighbors, and to our own forgetful hearts, until You bring us home. In Jesus' name, Amen.
