Stoned at Lystra, Preaching at Derbe

Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.

Historical Context

Luke wrote Acts around A.D. 62-64 as the second volume of his account to Theophilus, tracing how the risen Christ built His church through the Spirit and the apostles. Chapter 14 falls near the end of Paul and Barnabas's first missionary journey, roughly A.D. 46-48, through the Roman province of Galatia in what is now southern Turkey.

The cities named here sat along a well-traveled Roman road system. Lystra was a small colony where, just verses earlier, the crowd had tried to worship Paul and Barnabas as Hermes and Zeus after a healing. That same crowd, stirred up by hostile Jews who followed Paul from Antioch of Pisidia and Iconium (over a hundred miles away), turned and stoned him. Stoning was meant to kill, and Luke's language suggests everyone assumed it had. Paul later refers to this beating in 2 Corinthians 11:25 and probably to the scars in Galatians 6:17.

What makes verse 20 remarkable is not just that Paul survived but that he walked back into the city that had just tried to murder him, and the next day traveled some sixty miles to Derbe to preach again. Then he retraced his steps through the very cities where he had been driven out, in order to appoint elders and steady the new believers.

The closing verses describe the return to Syrian Antioch, the sending church, where Paul reports what God had done. This is the first recorded missionary report to a home congregation, and the first explicit statement that God had "opened a door of faith to the Gentiles." The pattern of the whole Gentile mission is set here.

Reflection

Paul was stoned, dragged out of the city as a corpse, and by the next morning he was on the road to the next town to preach again. Read that slowly. This is not stoic grit. This is a man who has seen the risen Christ and knows what he is walking toward.

And what does he tell the young converts when he circles back? Not that the Christian life will get easier now that they have believed. He tells them the opposite: "through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God." That "must" is not a warning to scare them off. It is the shape of the road. The Master was crucified before He was raised. The servant is not above his Master.

We live in a moment when much of what passes for Christian teaching promises the exact opposite: your best life now, God as the guarantor of your comfort, faith as a technique for smoother days. Paul, bruised and bleeding, would not recognize this gospel. He preached a Christ who saves us from sin and hell, not from hardship.

But notice what Paul does not do. He does not leave the new believers to figure it out alone. He goes back. He appoints elders. He prays and fasts and entrusts them to the Lord. Tribulation is real, but so is the church, the ministry, the grace of God that carries His people through.

If you are suffering as a Christian today, whether from open opposition or the quieter grind of faithfulness in a hostile age, hear this: the road is hard because it is the King's road, and the King has walked it first. It leads home.

Where in your life right now are you tempted to believe that hardship means God has abandoned you, and how does Paul's return to Lystra reframe that?

Prayer

Father, we thank You for servants like Paul who counted their lives as nothing so that we might hear the gospel. Give us the same steady courage. When tribulation comes, keep us from self-pity and from the false gospels that promise ease. Root us in Your church, under faithful shepherds, and remind us that the road of the cross is the road home. Open doors of faith through us, we pray, to those who have not yet believed. In Jesus' name, Amen.
