Today's Verse

Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses and he said, 'Is there not Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well.'

Exodus 4:14

Historical Context

Exodus was written by Moses for the generation that came out of Egypt and their children, to teach them who the LORD is and why they belong to Him. Chapter 4 sits at the end of the burning bush encounter. Moses is eighty years old, forty of those spent in Midian shepherding his father-in-law's flocks. He has already offered three objections: Who am I? Who are you? What if they don't believe me? God has answered each one. Now Moses tries a fourth: I am not eloquent. Then a fifth: send someone else.

Behind Moses stands a specific situation. Israel has been in Egypt for four centuries. A pharaoh who did not know Joseph has enslaved them and ordered their male infants drowned. The generation that remembered Jacob is gone. The people cry out under the whip. God has heard, and He is about to act, but He intends to act through a man.

The strange episode at the lodging place (verses 24-26) assumes what every Israelite reader knew: circumcision was the covenant sign given to Abraham in Genesis 17, and any male not circumcised was to be cut off from his people. Moses, of all people, was going to demand that Pharaoh release God's covenant son while neglecting the covenant sign in his own household. Zipporah, a Midianite, understands what is at stake and acts.

The staff Moses carries is the ordinary tool of a shepherd. By chapter's end it will part a sea. Aaron, three years older, is already on his way out to meet him. God has been arranging this rescue long before Moses agreed to it.

Reflection

Moses is not lying about his weakness. He really is slow of speech. The problem is not his self-assessment but what he does with it. He turns his weakness into a reason to disobey. God's answer cuts through the fog: Who made man's mouth? The One who calls you is the One who formed you, tongue and all. Your limitations are not news to Him.

Then Moses drops the pretense of humility: please send someone else. And the anger of the LORD is kindled. That is a sobering line. We tend to think reluctance before a hard calling is a kind of piety. God does not. Refusing what He has clearly asked, because it will cost us and stretch us and expose us, is not humility. It is disobedience wearing humility's coat.

And yet notice what God does. He does not destroy Moses. He gives him Aaron. The provision is real, though it is not without cost: Aaron will later make the golden calf. When we insist God accommodate our fear, He often does, and we live with the consequences of a smaller obedience than He offered.

Most of us are not being called to confront a pharaoh. But we are called to speak of Christ to a neighbor, to lead in our home, to say the hard true thing in a conversation that would be easier to duck. And the excuses sound reasonable. I'm not gifted that way. I'll say it wrong. Someone else would be better.

The One who made your mouth is with your mouth. He teaches what you shall speak. Go.

For Reflection

Where in your life right now are you asking God to send someone else, and what excuse have you dressed up as humility?

Prayer

Father, You made my mouth, and You know my fears better than I do. Forgive me for the times I have called my disobedience humility and hidden behind my weakness rather than trusting Your strength. Give me courage to go where You send me and to speak what You give me to say. Be with my mouth, as You promised Moses, and let the people around me hear of Your saving works. In Jesus' name, Amen.
