Today's Verse
And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.

Historical Context
Genesis was given to Israel through Moses, and by the time these words were read aloud in the wilderness, the nation already knew the ending: they were the seventy who went down to Egypt and became a people. Chapter 45 is the hinge on which that story turns.
Joseph has been in Egypt roughly twenty-two years. Sold by his brothers at seventeen (Genesis 37:2), he rose through slavery and prison to become vizier at thirty (41:46), and the famine is now in its second of seven years (45:6). His brothers have made two trips for grain. They do not recognize him, partly because he looks and speaks like an Egyptian, partly because they long ago wrote him off as dead. Joseph has tested them by demanding Benjamin, watching to see whether they will betray a second favored son the way they betrayed the first. Judah's speech in chapter 44, offering himself in Benjamin's place, breaks Joseph open.
A few cultural notes help. Egyptians would not eat with Hebrews (43:32), and shepherds were despised (46:34), which is why Goshen, on the eastern edge of the Delta, will suit Jacob's clan. To weep loudly enough that Pharaoh's household hears it, Joseph has cleared the room of Egyptian officials: what happens next is a family matter, and a covenant matter, not a state ceremony. When he says God has made him "a father to Pharaoh," he is using an actual Egyptian court title for a trusted royal counselor.
Into that carefully staged silence, the second-most powerful man in the world says three Hebrew words his brothers never expected to hear again: I am Joseph.
Reflection
There are two miracles in this scene, and we usually only notice one.
The first is Joseph's reading of his own life. He does not deny what his brothers did. He names it plainly: "whom you sold into Egypt." But over that true sentence he lays a truer one: "God sent me before you to preserve life." Both are real. The brothers acted freely and wickedly. God acted sovereignly and savingly. Joseph does not resolve the mystery, he simply bows to it. Twenty-two years in a pit, a prison, and a palace have taught him that the hand he could not see was never absent.
The second miracle is that he weeps. A lesser man, vindicated and enthroned, would have savored the moment his betrayers trembled before him. Joseph clears the room so no Egyptian will witness their shame, falls on Benjamin's neck, and kisses them all. This is what forgiveness looks like when it is real: not a cool transaction, but tears.
And of course we are meant to see past Joseph to a greater Brother. One who was also sold for silver by his own, also handed over to Gentiles, also raised to the right hand of a king, also the only bread in a starving world. When the risen Christ meets the disciples who abandoned him, he too says, in effect, I am Jesus, come closer, peace be with you. The gospel is not that our sin was not sin. It is that God, without excusing it, bent it toward the preserving of life, and the King we betrayed is the King who weeps over us and feeds us.
Come closer. He is not finished with your family, or with you.

Where in your own story are you still refusing to say both sentences at once, "they sinned against me" and "God sent me here to preserve life"?
Prayer
Father, we confess that we have been Joseph's brothers more often than we have been Joseph. We have envied, betrayed, and hidden. Yet in Christ you have made the One we wounded the very One who feeds us. Teach us to name our sin honestly and to trust your hidden hand completely. Give us tears like Joseph's when those who have hurt us come near, and tears like Christ's for those we have hurt. Preserve our lives, and our households, until we are gathered home. In Jesus' name, Amen.
