Cut to the Heart on Pentecost Morning

Peter's first sermon ended not with applause but with three thousand souls asking what to do next.

Historical Context

Luke wrote Acts as the second volume of his account to Theophilus, likely in the early 60s AD, tracing how the risen Christ's kingdom spread from Jerusalem outward. Chapter 2 records the day of Pentecost — Shavuot — the Jewish feast held fifty days after Passover. Jerusalem was crowded with pilgrims from across the Roman world, many of them Jews of the diaspora who spoke Greek or Aramaic and had traveled to worship at the temple. Pentecost commemorated the giving of the Law at Sinai; now, on the same feast, God gives the Spirit to write his law on human hearts, as Jeremiah had promised.

Peter's sermon, which our passage answers, was not gentle. He had told this crowd — some of whom had likely been in Jerusalem during Passover seven weeks earlier — that they had crucified the Lord's Messiah. He quoted Joel and the Psalms to prove that Jesus was the promised King whom God had raised from the dead and enthroned. The Holy Spirit, poured out visibly that morning, was the sign of his reign.

The crowd's question in verse 37 is the first recorded response to apostolic preaching after the Resurrection. Peter's answer — repent and be baptized — became the pattern for the church. Baptism in the name of Jesus was a shocking public break: a Jew publicly identifying with the crucified Nazarene as Lord. Verses 42-47 give us the earliest snapshot of Christian community life: apostolic teaching, shared meals, prayer, generosity, worship at the temple, and daily gatherings in homes. This is the church in its infancy, and it is already unmistakably itself.

Reflection

"Cut to the heart." Luke chose a violent word. Peter did not soothe the crowd; he told them the truth about what they had done, and the Spirit drove that truth inward like a blade. Their response was not offense but a question: what shall we do?

That question is the beginning of every real conversion. Not curiosity. Not admiration for Jesus as a teacher. A cut heart, and the desperate sense that something must be done, now, about what we have become and what we have done to God.

Peter's answer is startlingly simple and it has not changed. Repent. Turn. Stop defending the life you have built against God and let it die. Be baptized — publicly identified with the crucified and risen Christ, your sins washed away in his name. Receive the Spirit he freely gives.

Notice what follows. The three thousand did not drift off to think it over. They devoted themselves — that is the language of a settled life, not a mood. Teaching. Fellowship. Breaking of bread. Prayer. Shared possessions. Daily worship. Glad and generous hearts. The Spirit did not produce private spirituality; he produced a people.

Much of what passes for Christianity today is untouched by any blade. We want Jesus without the cut, forgiveness without repentance, belonging without devotion, the Spirit without the church. Acts 2 will not let us have it. The promise, Peter says, is for you and your children and for all who are far off — but it comes through the same door it always has: a heart cut open, a life laid down, a Lord received.

Father, we thank you for the sharp mercy of your Word. Do not let us grow calloused. Cut our hearts open again where we have made peace with sin, and give us the grace to ask, with the crowd on Pentecost, what shall we do. Draw us into the life of your people — devoted, prayerful, generous, glad. And by your Spirit, make us bold to name Jesus as Lord before a crooked generation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
