Today's Verse
Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.'

Historical Context
Exodus 16 falls one month to the day after Israel walked out of Egypt. They have crossed the Red Sea, sung the Song of Moses, and drunk sweetened water at Marah. Now they are camped in the wilderness of Sin, a stretch of arid land on the way to Sinai, and the provisions they carried out of Egypt are running low.
To understand their panic, remember what they left. Egypt was the breadbasket of the ancient world. The Nile flooded on schedule, granaries were full, and even slaves ate. The 'meat pots' they remember were probably real: Egyptian laborers were fed stews and bread as part of their rations. Slavery had a menu. Freedom, so far, does not.
The wilderness cannot feed two million people. That is the point. God has deliberately led them into a place where survival is impossible without Him, and He will keep them there for forty years. The manna that begins in this chapter will fall six mornings a week until they cross the Jordan (Joshua 5:12). An entire generation will grow up never having planted or harvested a grain of wheat.
The grumbling in verse 3 is worse than it sounds in English. The Hebrew verb suggests a settled, muttering discontent that spreads through the camp. And notice what they say: they wish they had died in Egypt. One month out of slavery, and they are already rewriting their bondage as the good old days. Moses tells them plainly in verse 8 what they have not yet grasped: complaints against God's appointed leaders are complaints against God Himself. The Lord answers not with rebuke but with bread, and with a test woven into the gift.
Reflection
God could have filled their storehouses for a year. Instead He gave them one day's bread at a time, and told them not to save any for tomorrow. The ones who tried to hoard found their pantry full of worms by morning.
This is not because God is stingy. It is because He is teaching them something they cannot learn any other way. In Egypt, their security was in the granary. In the wilderness, their security has to be in Him. And the only way to learn that lesson is to wake up hungry and watch Him feed you, morning after morning, until trust becomes the shape of your soul.
We do not usually want daily bread. We want a year's supply, a funded retirement, a clear five-year plan, a diagnosis with a good prognosis. We want to know that we will be fine, so that we can stop needing God quite so urgently. The wilderness is God's mercy against that impulse. He keeps us on a shorter leash than we would choose because a shorter leash keeps us closer to Him.
Jesus knew this passage well. When He taught us to pray, He did not say ask for this year's bread, or this month's. He said, 'Give us this day our daily bread.' And when Satan tempted Him in another wilderness, He answered from Deuteronomy 8, the chapter that interprets the manna: man does not live by bread alone, but by every word from the mouth of God.
The grumbling in your heart this week is not really about the circumstances. It is about whether you believe the God who fed them in the desert is feeding you now. He is. Gather today's portion. Tomorrow's will be there tomorrow.

Prayer
Father, we confess how quickly we grumble, how easily we romanticize what You rescued us from, how stubbornly we try to store up tomorrow instead of trusting You today. Teach us the discipline of daily bread. Loosen our grip on the manna we cannot keep and open our hands to receive what You give this morning. Feed us with Yourself, the true Bread from heaven, and let our trust grow deeper with every sunrise. In Jesus' name, Amen.
